Retrieving Top Stories, New Stories, and Best Stories

Understanding Story Feeds

The Hacker News MCP Server provides access to three primary story feeds that reflect different aspects of community activity. Each feed serves a distinct purpose and helps you stay informed about what's happening in the tech community.

Top Stories represent the most popular content currently on Hacker News. These are submissions that have received significant upvotes and engagement from the community, rising to prominence on the front page. Top stories are ideal when you want to see what's capturing widespread attention right now.

New Stories show the latest submissions as they arrive on the platform. This feed gives you access to fresh content before it gains traction, allowing you to spot emerging trends early or monitor specific topics in real-time. New stories haven't yet been filtered by community voting, so you'll see everything as it's posted.

Best Stories highlight content that has demonstrated lasting value and quality. This curated feed uses Hacker News' ranking algorithm to identify submissions that have earned sustained community approval, making it perfect for finding high-quality articles and discussions without wading through everything.

Retrieving Stories

To access any of these feeds through your AI assistant, simply make a natural language request. You might ask to "show me the top stories on Hacker News" or "what are the latest new submissions?" The server handles the technical details automatically.

Each story returned includes essential information: the title, URL to the original content, author username, submission time, current score (upvotes), and the number of comments. You'll also receive a unique identifier for each story, which you can use to dive deeper into comment threads or reference specific submissions.

Practical Applications

Use top stories when you want to understand what the tech community considers important right now. This feed is excellent for daily briefings or catching up on significant developments.

Query new stories when you're monitoring specific topics or companies. You can check this feed frequently to catch discussions as they begin, allowing you to participate early or track sentiment in real-time.

Access best stories when you're looking for high-quality content for research or learning. This feed filters out noise and delivers submissions that have proven their value to the community.

The flexibility of these three feeds ensures you can tailor your Hacker News monitoring to match your specific needs, whether that's staying current, discovering quality content, or tracking emerging conversations.
